Don’t Sleep on Bulawayo-based Prince of Soul, MJ Sings

Bulawayo- We’re not sure if Zimbabwe in its entirety is ready for MJ Sings. His music is known widely in the country’s cultural hub, Bulawayo. MJ Sings’, birth name Mncedisi Ncube, has earned the title of Prince of Soul and he is living up to it. The Afro-Pop, Soul singer-songwriter has been gradually rising the ranks in the music scene since he launched his career pre-Covid with a collection of singles titled ‘Soul & Mind’.

MJ Sings has contributed immensely to the re-awakening of soul music in Zimbabwe with his soulful love ballads and soft yet powerful vocals. Gracing the stages along Berita, Oliver Mtukudzi and Tresor. In 2019, he made his debut solo performance at the Garden Court and he promised to make it a regular thing. However, when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, MJ took a break along with the rest of the world.

Collaboratively Speaking

To date, MJ has released several hits including Dali Wami and Koloi. He has been working alongside a notable producer Murphy Cubic. In addition to his lyricism, MJ Sings also moonlights as a Producer having contributed greatly to the production of Lee Mchoney’s album Sana Lwami, among other projects.

Recognition

MJ Sings’ penning was recently featured by South African Artist, Speedy of Bongo Maffin fame on a track titled ‘Ang’phelanga’. It’s taken some time but we’re glad to see MJ Sings start to gain recognition over the borders too not only as a singer but as a composer. He was also billed to rock the stage in Harare at EarGround’s Amplifayah Festival last month to some rave reviews.

As a Composer

Although music composition and writing are skills many musicians struggle to master, MJ Sings does not seem to have that problem. His isiNdebele songwriting and delivery make him a darling of the city. We can’t wait to see what happens when he mixes it up with some isiZulu and Xhosa for a wider market. We suspect it’s only a matter of time now before he blows up beyond Bulawayo’s scene.
