Winky D was yet again the recipient of another international award this past weekend. The Dancehall & Raggae artist was honoured with the Best African Dancehall Entertainer Award at the 40th International Ragge and World Music Awards (IRAWMA). The awards ceremony was held on Sunday the 7th of May in Kingston, Jamaica.

The Zimdancehall chanter came out on top in a category that had Ghana’s Stonebwoy, and Shata Wale, Nigeria’s Patoranking, and Sierra Leone’s Star Zee.

This award comes as Winky D’s second IRAWMA. In 2021 he won the award in the same category and this year’s honour makes it back to back awards for his at the showcase as there wasn’t a ceremony held last year.

At a time when local award shows seem oblivious to his existence, the value of Winky D’s stock continues to rise internationally. His latest honour makes it two international awards for him this year, as in January he took home an AFRIMA (All Africa Music Awards) for Best Artist in Southern Africa.

Winky D expressed gratitude to his fans and said the award was a symbol of music’s universal nature.

Being recognised by our wider music reaffirms the universal nature of heartfelt music and it’s unshakable ability to bring humanity together, regardless of diverse beliefs and superficial differences. This award is particularly poignant as it has been presented to us during a period of intense challenges and adversity.
