About Chanje Kunda’s Growing Fling with Zimbabwe

Our theatre crush is back in Zimbabwe and we are super hyped to see her again. This creative genius is Chanje Kundi, a Zambian born and UK based playwright who has been a trailblazer in Theatre around the European circuit.

Chanje was in Zimbabwe this year for HIFA, courtesy of British Council where she was performing her one woman show centred around her own experiences titled Amsterdam. We absolutely fell in love with her after watching the play at Reps theatre and we featured her as our crush that week. You can read all about that here!

She is back to rekindle her romance with Zimbabwe, courtesy of the Complete Arts Project led by veteran theatre practitioner, Peter Churu. She will help Mercy Nhauriranwa rehearse for a very controversial solo performance of the play Molly Street which is based on the harrowing tale from the 60’s. Molly was a sex worker who died in a terrible arson incident and legend says that her ghost haunts a street in Chiredzi. Interestingly the tale gained a lot of pop[ularity so much that the Chiredzi Town Council renamed the street after Molly!

Chanje is currently conducting a Stage Directing and Playwriting workshop at the Zimbabwe German Society until the 25th of August. It’s amazing how she has fallen in love with our theatre scene and we hope for more collaborations between her and local production companies.
