In the Zimbabwean music industry, Nyasha David is a name that has become synonymous with contemporary RnB. Bursting onto the scene in 2015, on the DreamStar competition, the singer has had a consistent work ethic that has seen him regularly doling out releases.
Mentored by Leonard Mapfumo, Nyasha David’s sound has often been genre bending, with uncanny ability to carry melodies at the heart of it.
The singer released his first album arrived in 2019, with the title Advocate of Love and it was good enough to cement the Shona word for advocate, “Gweta”, as his briquet. This project was followed by the album Songs of David, which gained him national recognition. A few months later, the release of the “Ikoko” remix featuring Takura brought him close to being a household name.
However, in 2025, 10 years after his career began, the singer had his biggest moment with the love song “Ta Ta Ta.” A melodious that has reached over 3 million views on YouTube and dominated the radio charts.
Seizing on this moment of attention, Nyasha David followed up the hit track with a 4-track EP titled Gweta Rine Gwenya.
Revelling in collaboration, Gweta Rine Gwenya sees Nyasha David breaking away from the sound we’ve come to expect from him. The singer delivers an EP that is quintessentially hip hop in nature, yet even on gritty trap beats Nyasha David stills seems at home.
Exclusively produced by Rodney Beatz, the project is characterised by instrumentals with a heavy bass line that have a booming sonic texture. Nyasha David still makes use of melodies but his verses have the cadence of rapper. This is complimented by his cast of collaborators, which include: M Killer, Voltz JT, Kae Chaps, ScripMula, Hillzy, Runna Rulez and Takura.
Mwari Wangu is a plea for God’s protection and guidance, perfectly summed up by the Nyasha David sung chorus: “Mwari wangu, Mwari wangu kani, ndinzvengesei, ndinzvengesi/Bhebhi rangu, bhebhi rangu Mwari, ndifencerei, ndifencerei.”
One Day (Mukai) speaks about the dreams of the future, with Michael Magz delivering the best feature on the project.
Whether it’s speaking about the future or things more present, the personal or the commonplace, there’s infectious rhythm to the music. Sleeping On Me sees Nyasha David donning the braggadocio that’s typical of every rapper with even the slightest bit of self belief.
Gweta Rine Gwenya is certainly experimental, yet it’s an experiment that works. Not that the cross pollination of RnB and hip hop is a new thing, but it hasn’t been delivered particularly in the way Nyasha David delivers it. It’s pocket of sound that the singer understands and explores well for just 4 tracks.
