Vocalist Tahle We Dzinza is known for revelling in storytelling. Subtle yet nuanced. Doused in foreign rhythms yet close to home. These are all trademarks of her craft that she brings to her latest single, “Sweetie Wo”. An ode to love, expressed through the lens of Shona culture.
Often the wanderer, in terms of her expression in music, Tahle We Dzinza returns to her roots with Sweetie Wo. The song is rooted in her identity as an African and it is inspired by the desire to understand all facets of her African identity.
I have the greatest desire to understand myself as an African first and foremost. I think it’s an area in which I am a growing in, and as I’ve grown older I’ve realised you can never run away from being who you are. Who you are is an innate part of being able to contribute in the places you have been put.
Tahle We Dzinza
Produced by Golden Fingers and Tadexx, Sweetie Wo is an Afropop fusion song that comes with a layered instrumental that comes to life with Tahle We Dzinza’s vocals. The song is the edification of a woman to her man in appreciation of what he does for her. This is especially captured in the first verse, where Tahle celebrates men of different totems.
Mhofu yemukono ini ndinokudai
Soko mutema ndinoku pemberai
Humba makombe munondidadisa
Samanyanga ndimi vandinoti daddy…
Sweetie Wo is easy on the ear, while vibrant and relatable due to it’s immersion in Shona culture. It should easily capture those with an imaginative heart and paint the picture of a modern, yet culturally appropriate love scenario.
The song was released with a visualizer that’s simply as good as a fully budgeted video. A concept that came up in a single day was flawlessly executed by 99 Orange Inc.
