AFROPOP is what we’re Excited About this Weekend

Harare – Having had our attention peaked by their afro-futuristically geometrical and colourful graphics occasionally struck onto our timelines; we had to investigate what AFROPOP is all about. AFROPOP is a Harare festival that  intends to celebrate young, black and brilliant Zimbabwean identity through music, film, photography, couture and art. So off course we would co-assign.

Hosted at Emagumeni’s Jack Bhawa and Pikicha Gallery spaces on the 26th of November this Saturday from noon. AFROPOP will include Art installations, Afro-inspired couture, Afrobeats and Jazz. The line-up features Fungai Nengare, KING HER, DJ Tannie Swiss, Dialed In and Raven Duchess to mention a few. The AFROPOP Arts Lounge at Jack Bhawa will sport Virtual Reality Exhibitions while the Pikicha Gallery will show a poetry and visual Art experience co-curated by Kuda Mangoma and So Profound inspired by identity.

“Identity for young, black people here in Zimbabwe is dynamic and evolving. Rooted in our ancestral culture, bastardised by colonisation and rebuilt by us. This particular exhibition explores how we are creating the narratives that define who we are. You are currently witnessing a cultural work-in-progress as we grow from past, grow with present and grow to emerging. We are right now.”

— Kuda Mangoma; Exhibition Curator

The organizers have referred to the inaugural event as a premier celebration of what it means to be Zimbabwean and, by extension, what it means to be African with speakers and showcasers spanning across Creative disciplines such as renowned Fashion Designer, Tapfumaneyi Munenge and Graphic Designer, Fungi Dube.

Tickets are selling at $10.
