For it’s 10th edition this coming May, the European Film Festival Zimbabwe (EuroFilmFestZW) will debut a new film competition, titled Ultra Shorts. The competition will challenge filmmakers to tell a story in just 90 seconds.

Themed “The Hustle: Through Her Eyes,” Ultra Shorts is set to highlight the resourcefulness of women as they navigate their daily lives and create opportunities for themselves and their communities

In an interview with The Chronicle, Alex Gwaze, co-curator and co-ordinator for the European Film Festival Zimbabwe, shared that the theme was inspired by the defiant spirit of Zimbabwean women

“From street vendors to entrepreneurs, their hustle is real, and their determination is inspiring. We want to shine a spotlight on their innovative minds, celebrating their triumphs and stories of resilience in all aspects of Zimbabwean life,” he said.

The competition is open to aspiring filmmakers aged 18–35, residing in Zimbabwe.

The winner of the will receive an iPhone, while the first and second runners-up will be awarded vouchers. The submission deadline is May 9.

The 2025 edition of the European Film Festival Zimbabwe is set to kick off on the 30th of May at Mbare Art Space in Harare. The festival’s flagship film competition, BIOSKOP!, received 80 entries – up from 55 last year – and organisers are hopeful Ultra Shorts will have the same response.
