Whatever you think about Movement for Democratic Change Alliance leader Pastor Nelson Chamisa, the man is nothing if not a genuinely cheerful person and clearly, a leader who is full of surprises.
From his much-foretoken political tweetups to making surprises at gospel shows, he gets a lot of heat and wild standing ovation every time he appears.
Earlier this year, he attended Rev TT Chivaviro‘s Matishamisa Jireh album launch at Ambassador Hotel in Harare where he bought the CD for $100.
Last Friday was no different— in fact, it was more thrilling. The Pastor delighted fans when he opened yet again his enormous bag of surprises by joining musician Mathias Mhere on stage to take part in the challenge to sing the track Sarafina off Mhere’s new album Panogara Nyasha, which was launched at 7 Arts Theatre in Avondale.
Dressed ceremoniously in a brown and grey suit, Chamisa showed the world that he has another passion other than policy-making and arguing cases in court and that is singing and dancing to the Lord. Based on concertgoers’ reactions, the cleric-cum-politician drop-in was more than welcome, even if he’s not a pro at either the two.
It was an amusing moment as it was reflective as people got to watch a potential bearer of the biggest job in the country dedicating his time to dabble with revellers.
Other musicians who also took part in the challenge were Pastors Trymore Bande and Olinda Marowa.
Chamisa, who was the guest of honour at the launch, promised to deal effectively with piracy and ensure that artists enjoy the fruits of their labour if he is elected the country’s President in the fast-approaching general elections.
He said that assuming the office of the presidency would afford him an opportunity to improve artists’ lot, of course, before he reminded attendees his presence at the launch was not political, but he had come to throw his weight behind his “brother in Christ” Mhere.
Pastor Chamisa bought the album for $1 000 and went further to say the album Panogara Nyasha was a prophecy over Zimbabwe and that he always found Mhere’s music soothing after fighting his “daily political battles”.
Above and beyond, other iconic figures who bought the album for an admirable prize were Prophet Trust Rwanga who bided $2 500, Tawanda Mwashita (Chihwa Tours Managing Director) $500, AFM Church Overseer Amon Chinyemba $300, Zimpraise co-founder, Joseph Madziyire $200, Mono Mukundu $500 and Bachelors Republic who bought 20 000 CDs and offered $2 500.
