Sauti Sol‘s Polycarp Otieno is crazy about fitness. The Kenyan Guitarist and Producer used his influence to launch co-launch the Sweat Station Bootcamp last year to foster is a community-based work out in Nairobi. What started as a couple’s event on Valentine’s Day has since evolved into a fortnightly charitable event for Sauti Sol fans all over the world.

“it’s meant to bring the community together…to build a culture of wellness,” Polycarp explained to  #ENTHUSE.

Admittedly, bands with Sauti Sol‘s level of acclaim are associated with the rock n’ roll lifestyles of booze, drugs and party. Polycarp and the whole Sauti Sol crew hope to gradually change that image.

“We want to change the perspective of Musicians, even with the ones back home. Often we as musicians don’t take the care that we need. Our bodies are instruments, when we live healthier lives we create better music,” said Polycarp.

Polycarp highlighted Mental Health as a great motivator for fitness in the Entertainment industry;

“Some of these careers can get quite depressing, there is so much pressure and people have expectations.  You need to be happy within yourself,” he said.

Funds raised by the Sweat Nation Boot Camps usually go towards feeding the homeless through soup kitchens.

“We also respond to a need presented in the country we’re in at the time”

Sauti Sol will be hosting a Zimbabwean edition of the fitness event in Harare, Zimbabwe the morning of their Unplugged Festival event to raise money for Cyclone Idai victims.

Sauti Sol and Unplugged Zim partner with local Fashion Designer Chenesai Mangoma who expressed awe at the band’s dedication.

“This is very unprecedented; so many kids are discouraged to pursue Music because of the rockstar stereotype! I think it’s amazing to see musicians change the face of Music and to paint Musicians in a different light,” enthused Chenesai.
