Telecel Zimbabwe has gone dark due to software renewal challenges.

Public Relations Officer at Telecel, Zitha Dube agreed that the mobile line has been experiencing network challenges but refuted claims that POTRAZ had retracted the red sim card’s operating license.

“At the moment, customers are failing to make calls and at times data services,” Dube said.

“This is due to expired software on the main Mobile Switching Controller (MSC).”

The Telecel PR however said the software has since been renewed

But the network is still having call control rejections.

“The company is working in close co-operation with the vendor Huawei, to rectify the challenge and we are confident of resolution in the shortest possible time,” Dube said.

“We would like to assure all stakeholders that there is no Regulatory threat to the operating license and we expect normal services to resume as soon as the technical challenge is rectified.”

Dube’s statement refutes a narrative that was already circulating that Telelcel was shutting down.

Fears of Zimbabwe’s third-largest mobile telecommunications services once appeared in 2015, after POTRAZ canceled Telecel’s operating license, giving the firm 30 days of operations.
