Domboshawa Theological College Principal Reverend Dr Roy Musasiwa has a unique calling that of developing leaders of integrity and reviving the body of Christ.
The Doctor who does not compromise on God’s word recently spoke fervently on why corruption is endemic in Africa and the roles of ethical Christian and even non-Christian leaders in nation building and other various issues at Zimbabwe Faith Ethics and Development Association (ZIFEDA) forum last Thursday.
The symposium took place at Upper Room Ministries in Harare and its theme was The Necessity for Ethical Leaders in Zimbabwean Churches and Politics Today.
In his presentation, the Rev. who described corruption as an endemic problem that has presented a challenge to the continent’s socio-economic and political situation quoted Prov 29:2 2 that says:
‘When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan.’
He divulged his mind:
‘How much groaning has happened in the DRC under Mobuto Sese Seko: richest countries with minerals equivalent to US$34.1 trillion. Yet today one of the poorest countries on earth even claiming no money to hold an election. How much groaning has happened in Uganda under Idi Amin?”
He continued:
‘How much groaning happened under other corrupt leaders? I don’t think we should run away from our own country. How much groaning has happened in our own very land because of a lack of Ethical leadership in Politics?’
Dr Musasiwa then pointed out one of Africa’s foremost orators, Prof. P. L. O. Lumumba who at disparate occasions has deplored the tremendous destruction done to African states because of corruption. The Kenyan legal pundit observes that in Africa the shortcut to ill-earned wealth is to solicit a political office. According to his computations, corruption among leaders in Africa has grown into a crime against mankind. It has slain more people than all the civil wars in Africa combined and more than the holocaust!
In his argument, Reverend Musasiwa noted that African rulers are even hesitant to leave behind the office for worry of prosecution for corruption so they seek continued protection of office (impunity) and that they also select to work with the unscrupulous as they remain beholden to the heads who can open their files when it befits them.
The Dr also said the dilemma of underhanded dealing has as well taken over the church of God. He equates launching a new denomination as a thoroughfare to enrich oneself and criticised the art of travelling to West Africa to get spiritual capabilities, a thing that has trended lately.
He argued:
‘We said earlier on the road to ill-gotten wealth is to seek a political office. Now we say the road to ill-gotten wealth is to plant a church and look for powers. Travel as far as Ghana Nigeria, and other countries to seek powers to razmatize followers into parting with their money.’
Rev Musasiwa also said that those who have been hailed to serve in the house of God and those yearning to hold public office were expected to showcase leadership qualities worthy of emulation as bad moral choices do affect the rest of our society.
Among the dignitaries at the forum was the Mayor of Harare Cllr Bernard Manyenyeni who also spoke during the forum, Dr Noah Pashapa and Nigel Chanakira.
