POVO, a Zimbabwean media and news company has come under a social media fire this week for enlisting ZAOGA FIF’s Archbishop Ezekiel Guti under an inventory of leaders who have served long in the office, who people should consider doing away with.

Posting on their official Facebook page, the company wrote:

‘The lack of leadership renewal is not a Zanu PF problem, it’s a Zimbabwean problem

=>Ezekiel H. Guti, Leader of ZAOGA since 1960 (57 years)

=>Robert Mugabe, PM & President of Zimbabwe since 1980 (37 years)

=>Tobaiwa Mudede, Registrar General since 1985 (32 years)

=>Augustine Chihuri, Police Commissioner since 1991 (26 years)

=>Morgan Tsvangirai, MDC President since 1999 (18 years)

=>Lovemore Madhuku, NCA leader since 1999 (18 years)

=>David Parirenyatwa, Minister of Health since 2002 (15 years)

=>Karikoga Kaseke, Zimbabwe Tourism Authority boss since 2005 (12 years)

*Leadership renewal instills new ideas, perspectives & unleashes potential its a necessity in all institutions from companies, countries, churches, businesses, ngo’s and unions’

The post, as profound and a strong case it makes on the nature of  leadership in Zimbabwe, however did not dwell well with the supporters and believers of the  nonagenarian spiritual leader who  believe his inclusion was inappropriate and indecorous.

Most of them were were quick to express their outrage on social media, and here are some of the responses.

In their defense, howbeit POVO explained why they were justified in including Ezekiel Guti on that list. In another post they wrote:

‘Many complaining about the inclusion of Ezekiel H. Guti in post on the lack of renewal in Zimbabwean institutions

=>Leadership renewal is a human thing
=>As long as there are humans forming any type of organisations. Leadership renewal is a necessity
=>Guti has been the leader of ZAOGA since he formed the church in1960 (57 years) today Guti is 94 years old

5 points to consider

1. This fact of the lack of renewal in ZAOGA does not in anyway take away the great leadership qualities and achievements of Ezekiel H. Guti. He is after all a mere mortal like all of us.

2. Churches are voluntary associations & its the rights of the members of churches to choose not to have leadership renewal in their institutions but

3. That won’t stop external individuals drawing lessons from their leadership mistakes

4. There is a reason why Zimbabwe has hundreds of thousands of churches which are constantly splintering

5. For example, AFM is the mother of all pentecostal churches in Zimbabwe
=>Zaoga came out of AFM
=>Faith World Ministries came out of ZAOGA (Bartholomew Manjoro)
=>Impact Christian Centre came out of ZAOGA (Bishop David Kanokanga)
=>United Family International Church came out AFM (Emmanuel Makandiwa)
=>Heartfelt International Ministries came out AFM (Tavonga Vutabwashe)
=> Family of God Church (FOG) came out of the Reformed Church of Zimbabwe (Andrew Wutawunashe)’
