For all book lovers, today marks the day we celebrate wordsmiths whether past, present bridging to the future. So many books, so little time! If you are dreading to start on that new book on your shelf or phone, today is the day. Do it for the culture! UNESCO worldwide celebrates to promote the power of books and reading for all. Yes, they mean you. The person reading this article.

So what is World Book day all about!

World Book and Copyright Day is a celebration to promote the enjoyment of books and reading. Each year, on 23 April, celebrations take place all over the world to recognize the magical power of books. A link between the past and the future, a bridge between generations and across cultures.

23 April is a symbolic date in world literature. It is the date on which several prominent authors, William Shakespeare, Miguel Cervantes, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. This date was a natural choice for UNESCO’s General Conference, held in Paris in 1995, to pay a worldwide tribute to books and authors on this date. Furthermore, encouraging everyone to access books – most beautiful invention for sharing ideas beyond the boundaries of human space and time as well as the most powerful forces of poverty eradication and peacebuilding.

By championing books and copyright, UNESCO stands up for creativity, diversity and equal access to knowledge…With the active involvement of all stakeholders: authors, publishers, teachers, librarians, public and private institutions, humanitarian NGOs and the mass media. As well all those who feel motivated to work together in this world celebration of books and authors. World Book and Copyright Day have become a platform to rally together millions of people all around the world.

#Enthuse team join this journey and we celebrate by sharing our favourite book quotes:

When reading a book, a person might forget the character’s name but favorite messages always stick. Book quotes are always remembered for different reasons. Whether as words of advice or inspiration and even raw moments of pain that are so perfectly expressed. They just stay with you long after you have finished the book and they often pop into your head at unexplained moments.

Here are some book quotes that are worth remembering, if you haven’t read the book, let these serve as teasers (wink wink)

“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”

― Maya Angelou, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

“And so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”

— F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

“As he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.”

— John Green, The Fault In Our Stars

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go…”

― Dr. Seuss, Oh, The Places You’ll Go!

“Among the Igbo the art of conversation is regarded very highly, and proverbs are the palm-oil with which words are eaten.”
― Chinua Achebe, Things Fall Apart

“Whatever you are looking for is also looking for you. You see, don’t only look. Be available and ready when it shows up”
― Sahndra Fon Dufe

“A powerful leader has no problem letting go of power”
― Lazarus Takawira, Imagine Africa: Home Hope Harmony
