Sex Talk: It smells like fish!

First of all, to set the record straight, male genitals don’t smell like cologne. I know there’s thing where guys think their junk is a gift from on high and they don’t have any accompanying odours but guys! When you don’t wash down there, it just smells terrible. Balls (the scrotum) sweat, and believe me they sweat a lot. Scientifically they have to inorder for the testes to remain at a cool temperature that doesn’t denature the sperm. Especially in this summer heat and after a long hard day at work.

A bath or two (preferably) wouldn’t hurt. And to my brothers who aren’t circumcised, man, you just have to be extra clean because that foreskin carries dirt and odours(and an increased risk of developing penile cancer). I personally commend anyone who’s been circumcised. It’s hygienic, smart and neat. But hey, maybe I have a fetish.

Anywho.

Genitals do smell kind of funky. And by that I don’t mean terrible but musty.

Being a woman, I’ve always been insecure about how I smell down there. I’ve wondered all my life ‘What should my vulva(popularly known to most as the vagina which it isn’t) smell like?’ By the way if you don’t know what the difference between the vulva and the vagina are here you go. You’re welcome.

Media, chauvinism and society in general aren’t kind to women. It’s a sad reality but we live in a world where as women we’re under the pressure to be something we aren’t. And that societal pressure extends to our genitals. We don’t walk around feeling proud of our pussies because somehow they taught us that we’re dirty. And so wondering about how your punani smells is a constant mental occupation for most women.

Now. How should it smell?

Everyone has a natural odour and so do genitals as I mentioned earlier. The vulva isn’t supposed to smell like flowers, perfume or candy. Just like balls and dicks don’t smell like a gift from on high. As such, don’t put stuff down there. Powders, perfumes, soap and Lord knows what else. These products affect the natural bacterial flora and pH of the the vulva and vagina and in some cases have been suspected to cause cancers.

And yes. From time to time it can smell bad down there and most times it isn’t because you aren’t bathing enough or even have an STI. Several factors can cause a change in genital odour.

Hormones: hormonal levels can shift for several reasons such as where you are in your menstrual cycle, exercise, food, contraceptives and severe imbalances.

Yeast Infections: these are caused by two types of Candida which is a fungas. These infections are more common than most people believe and can occur when something disrupts the natural pH of the vagina and vulva as well as other factors such a wearing tight trousers, old underwear and even bathing in a bathtub. Other symptoms of a yeast infection are itching, discharge which smells like sour milk and irritation.

Vaginosis: is caused by bacteria and again is triggered by so many factors which may even include semen.

Semen: has a different pH from the vagina and vulva. Where we thrive in an acidic environment the sperm is basic(opposites attract for sure).

All of these factors however are best diagnosed by a healthcare professional. Your local pharmacist will better advise. In conclusion, don’t rush to conclude that you’re severely sick if your pussy smells strange however if it smells like fish. Get help.
