Heartbreak, the tale of a love taken for granted, has long been one of the corner stones of R&B. As a relatable experience, it has made for subject matter that never gets tedious. However, artists have had the difficult task of having to set themselves apart in their delivery, and this is where “Ndiye” excels.
Melyssa’s duet with Kae Chaps, is a soulful love song that puts a twist on our expectations. “Ndiye” in Shona means the one, and while usually this is a phrase associated with happy ever afters, here it for the one who caused untold heartbreak.
The song opens with, “Ndiye mukomana wandaida, wandaiitira zvaaida/Ndichitomuonera paaida, achitondiitira zvaaida,” lyrics display a relationship that lacked reciprocation. “Ndiye” has a slightly humourous nature in it’s reflections but remains emotive. The Chiweddar produced track has an infectious rhythm that balances influences of Afrobeats and amapiano with R&B.
Melyssa and Kae Chaps voices are a near perfect compliment, with the former’s mellifluous performance being memorable. “Ndiye” comes as Melyssa’s second release of the year and it might just be her best release yet.
The R&B singer has been slowly making waves in the music space, with consistent single releases that keep increasing her audience. “Ndichadiwa” alongside Delroy Shewe is the singer’s most successful release to date, but she is on the precipice of breaking into the mainstream.
