“You had me down when you said I was broken. Was it that obvious, or just what you were hoping?”

Delivered in softly sung vocals, this is the poignant question at the beginning of “Deserve,” Kyla Blac’s most recent work and a masterclass of R&B. The opening refrain sets the tone for an emotive song that reminds us that Kyla Blac is right up there among Zimbabwe’s most gifted vocalists.

Dedicated to “anyone who’s ever given more than they got back,” the singer’s latest track is one centred on healing. Over a well crafted bassline, Kyla Blac expresses heartfelt emotions fuelled by introspection, packaged in intoxicatingly opulent vocals. The way she sees it, the past is a lesson, the present is the moment and the future optimistic.

“Deserve” adds to a growing catalogue of love songs by the multifaceted Zimbabwean artist. Songs such as “Some Day,” “DND,” “Problem,” and “Good One” have seen the singer not only making waves within Zimbabwe but across the continent. Kyla Blac recently appeared on a billboard in Nigeria, as part of UnitedMasters’ ground breaking “Most Likely Class of 2025” project.

A 12-track compilation, born from an immersive Lagos recording camp that comprised of 12 artists, 6 producers, 3 songwriters, and an engineer. The camp brought together some of Africa’s brightest emerging voices with heavyweight producers such as Sarz, WurlD, and Blaqbonez. Kyla and WordsofAzia — a French-born artist of Ivorian descent — were the only foreign-based artists, while the rest are from Nigeria.

A singer, songwriter, producer, and dancer. Kyla Blac’s music is a fusion of Afro soul, Afro pop, and neo soul, that draws inspiration from her roots and personal experiences. The singer has been consistently on an upward trajectory since making her debut. The singer recently had her biggest moment in Zimbabwe as she graced the stage at the Jacaranda Music Festival.
