Singer/songwriter Gemma Griffiths’ latest release is a bit of a blast from the past. The track “Where I’m Going” by the songstress, samples the late Bob “The Headmaster” Nyabinde’s classic track “Chabuda Hapana”.

In a post teasing the release, Gemma expressed gratitude to the late music icon for his guidance and gratitude. In an X (Twitter) post she wrote, “…to my friend and mentor, the late Bob Nyabinde, thank you for your guidance and inspiration.”

“Where I’m Going” shares parallel sentiments to the original 2002 song. The production is modernised with an infusion of Amapiano and Gemma shares the added sentiment of knowing where she’s destined to be. While bringing in new elements and giving the song a softer tone with her beautiful vocals, Gemma manages to keep certain parts of the original song intact.

It is bitter sweet to be releasing this song after Mr Nyabinde’s passing, but I was so grateful for his involvement in this track, right up until the end. This is for you Headmaster. Everyone, go listen now

“Chabuda Hapana” was originally released on Bob Nyabinde’s debut album Pane Nyaya in 2002. The track shot to the top of the charts, leading to him scooping the Afro-Jazz Artiste of the Year Award in 2003 at the Zimbabwe Musical Awards.

Gemma Griffiths’ “Where I’m Going” is now available on all streaming platforms.
