I Am Not Your Negro produced by former Haitian Minister and Political Activist Raoul Peck and narrated by Samuel L. Jackson completes what in 1979, African American Writer and Social commentator James Baldwin wrote as a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, “Remember This House.”

The book was to be an account of the lives and assassinations of three of his close friends: Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. At the time of Baldwin’s death in 1987, he left behind only 30 completed pages of this manuscript. Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished.

At a time of racial intolerance politely referred to as unrest, I Am Not Your Negro though aggressively referred to as an ‘American Story’ (rightfully so), is in my opinion not only a story of blackness but dare I stretch one of Africanness too. A reflection on history repeating itself in the likeliest of places, race is no longer a subject that can be ignored but one whose origins must be understood.

South African legend Bra Hugh Masekela once said, “you don’t know where going if you don’t know your past.”

We recommend you watch this multi-accoladed piece.
