Zimbabwean Music Festival Miombo Magic announced earlier this month that they wouldn’t be carrying on this May 2019. Miombo Magic is to a lot of campers and local music lovers a pure vibe, one that’s been missing since 2017. Sadly Miombo Magic is the second Zimbabwean festival to press pause on this year’s festivities. Just last month the Harare International Festival of Arts pulled the plug.
To our disappointment and that of many friends of Miombo Magic festival, the organizers attributed the decision to the Zimbabwean economic uncertainty. This lowered corporate support and left the fest with one bummer of an option; to sell the tickets at sky-high prices. But organizers Angus and Gus weren’t about it;
“There’s no sense in organising a festival no-one can afford to attend”, said the update.
Hear, hear!
But as with most things in life, there is a faint but silver lining all the same;
“We still live in a beautiful country, filled with extraordinarily talented musicians and surrounded by loving and joyful people. We have a responsibility to periodically remind ourselves of this and so, in place of the festival that we cannot hold, we will celebrate this with a camp out party at Miombo”
The Miombo Camp-Out Party will be hosted during the period in which the Festival was meant to happen at a much smaller scale of 250 guests from the 25th of May. Amenities will include abundant camping space, braai stands, standard ablution facilities and limited food stalls. Although the River Brewing Co.
Tickets aren’t live yet but will be soon at US$25/head (or RTGS equivalent) for the full weekend at first come first serve basis. The Miombo Camp Out will still sport a line up of stellar Zimbabwean live bands who are all performing for free to keep the festival spirit alive!
