The hilarious character of last year award will hands down go to our own Dr Amai, comedians can take a back seat and try to be funnier. However, we must say that her depiction in this attention-grabbing play is hands down her best impersonation as yet.
NAMA nominated director, Charles Munganasa, wrote and directed this comical account of the events which happened in Zimbabwe around November 2017 which led to the resignation of Former President Robert Mugabe. The play pays particular focus to the events which may have taken place inside Mugabe’s Blue Roof residence. Though most of the action is fictional, the story is guided by actual events which took place during the week of suspense.
It starts on the night that the military appeared on our television sets and assured us that they were dealing with some ‘criminal’ elements surrounding the Prez. The creators say that they were inspired by the need to document events for the benefit of future generations. They also believe in the newfound freedom of expression that the current government has extended to all citizens without fear of harassment or victimization.
The play was first staged in two sold-out shows in Masvingo and people had to be turned away from the venue. Due to the high acclamations is getting, Harare will get a chance to watch this play at Theatre in the Park from the 28th to the 30th of March.
The cast is made up of seasoned and upcoming actors, with Mike Khetani Banda playing the role of Robert Mugabe. Carol Magenga plays the dramatic Grace Mugabe. The writer also features as the no-nonsense General Chiwenga whilst Dereck Mapfumo, Donovan Takaendesa, Sydney Taivavashe, Rose Zivanai, Marayne Mtetwa and Tatenda Makava make up the rest of the cast.
