Zimbabwean artist Troy Makaza, is currently showcasing his debut solo exhibition in Côte d’Ivoire at the Galerie Farah Fakhr. Titled Leave the Door Open, the exhibition was developed by the artist during his residency with the gallery in Abidjan.

This new body of work explores pivotal, patriotic moments in Zimbabwe’s history, drawing parallels between the nation’s trajectory and that of its individual citizens.

Makaza has developed a distinct visual language — an abstract-figurative mode that renders his ideas tangible to both sight and touch.

His practice transcends the conventional boundaries between sculpture and painting, embodying both disciplines simultaneously. This synthesis, the outcome of sustained experimentation, has led to a new artistic category that remains deeply rooted in the contexts he inhabits. The artist primarily utilises silicone in creating his works.

“For me, the silicone represents youthfulness. It is a way to say: you are still young, you are still full of potential, you haven’t reached your full capacities yet. So, I still feel like I can push my practice further. I can develop it more, or I can learn new things every time. It is quite an interesting material to work with. You discover what I call ‘happy mistakes’,” shared Makaza.

Makaza’s work has been presented in significant exhibitions and fairs, including Zeitz MOCAA, the Zimbabwean Pavilion at the 2024 Venice Biennale, Art Basel Miami, and Art Dubai.
