The first phase of artists for the world’s biggest Afrobeats (and arguably Amapiano) festival was recently announced. It featured a selection of top acts in the two genres (along with a few big international acts) and among are three Zimbabweans. Sha Sha was the instantly recognisable name but alongside her are two talented Zimbabwean DJs in Charisse C and DJ Fistoz.
Whether just in jest or partly serious, it has often been said Zimbabwe is an extension of Amapiano’s home. And nothing makes it seem more so than Afro Nation’s recent lineup announcement. All three Zimbabwean acts will perform on Afro Nation’s Piano People stage. A stage set to host names like Kabza De Small, DJ Maphorisa, Major League, Uncle Waffles and DBN Gogo among others.
Sha Sha earned herself the title of Queen of Amapiano as she featured on hit record after hit record, while also releasing her debut EP to high acclaim. She managed to bag a BET Award for her troubles and last year she finally released her long awaited debut album. A project titled I’m Alive which was ranked in the Top 25 Dance Albums of the Year by Billboard.
Based in the UK, DJ Fistoz has been making a name for himself with his ability on the decks playing the Amapiano genre. He has opened for acts like Musa Keys, Major League DJz and The Scorpion Kings. In addition to being a producer, he’s also an events promoter and he’s regarded as one of Manchester’s finest DJs.
Charisse C is a DJ, Artist, founder of Abantu, one half of The Ascension & NTS Resident. Charisse C’s mixes can be found on Boiler Room, BBC Radio 1, BBC 1Xtra, NTS and No Signal Radio. Mixmag ranked her as one of the breakthrough DJs of the year in 2022.
