The Continent recently released it’s issue #110, which so happened to be it’s special year end edition. Included in this issue was a list by the editors and writers, celebrating the Africans who brought us joy, inspiration and hope in 2022. Termed the publication’s Africans Of The Year. Featured on the list this year were author NoViolet Bulawayo and politician/lawyer Fadzayi Mahere.
NoViolet Bulawayo, whose birth name is Elizabeth Zandile Tshele was honoured on the list for her latest literary feat, which saw her become the first black African woman to be nominated for The Booker Prize twice. The first was for We Need New Names in 2013 and then this years she was nominated for her novel Glory.
Fadzayi Mahere was recognised for using her voice to foster an active citizenry in Zimbabwe and her continuous efforts to hold the government accountable. Mahere currently holds the position of National Spokesperson in the opposition party Citizen’s Coalition for Change. She has been very vocal about the government’s failures and the need for change in how the country is governed.
Making up the rest of The Continent’s Africans of the Year were Thuso Mbedu, Eluid Kipchoge, Khaby Lame, Anita Soina, Desiree Ellis, Alaa Abd El-Fattah and Diébédo Francis Kéré. You can find their full issue here.
