Spotify recently opened up it’s Greasy Tunes Cafe in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. A month long pop-up cafe offering South Africans a 100% Spotify owned experience. Greasy Tunes will be celebrating African culture, music and food. Running for the length of July, the Greasy Tunes Cafe is part of Spotify’s efforts to connect fans with the music they love.
It will be a month of celebrating Spotify’s leading playlists, culture, community, conversation, creators, fans, and greasy South African meals.
In addition to serving up meals, the Greasy Tunes Cafe will have podcast recordings hosted by Maak ‘n Plan & The Sobering Podcast. Quiz nights by Vitamin Q accompanied by DJ sets by the likes of Glen Lewis, Yan Solo and Kaddy. Maglera Doe Boy and Kelvin Momo will also grace the event with performances.
The cafe will have weekly themed events celebrating particular African and South African genres
Week 1: Mint (EDM, Afrotech, House, Gqom)
Week 2: Amapiano Grooves (Amapiano to the World)
Week 3: Mzansi Raps (South African Hip Hop & Rap)
Week 4: Pan Africa (AfroBeats, RnB, AfroPop, Jazz)
Greasy Tunes attaches itself to various Joburg cultural communities, from the aesthetics down to the menu. The venue’s setup borrows from the township kota cafes with outdoor table tennis placed strategically in the venue while mini pool tables and Jenga adorn the tables. The concept was first run in London last year and it was a resounding success.
Spotify has witnessed the undeniable power of audio in spreading South African culture and trends, both within the continent and worldwide. Greasy Tunes, with its embodiment of South African culture and trends, represents an expansion of this influence by blending music and cuisine in a beloved city that resonates with countless individuals. – Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, Spotify’s Sub-Saharan Africa Managing Director
