Legendary sungura musician, Nicholas “Madzibaba” Zakaria has passed on. The news waa confirmed by his family in a statement published on Facebook. The musician was 68.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Nicholas Zakaria,the talented musician and beloved member of our community,” read a family statement published on social media.
“Nicholas left an indelible mark on the music world with his inspiring voice and dedication to his craft. His legacy will live on through his music, and he will be deeply missed by fans and loved ones.”
Affectionately known as “Madzibaba” or “Senior Lecturer,” Nicholas Zakaria, is regarded as one of the founding figures of the sungura genre. The musician had a professional career spanning nearly five decades. Born in 1957 at Belgownie Estate in Mazowe, he began playing guitar in secret after leaving school in Grade 7.
In 1984 he co-founded the Khiama Boys, the band that would become central to his legacy. The group included Cephas Karushanga, Levison Chakanyuka, Tineyi Chikupo, Alick Macheso, System Tazvida and Zakaria’s wife, Margaret Gweshe.
The Khiama Boys produced numerous albums and emerged as one key bands in the late 80s. Zakaria went on to release more than 26 albums during his career.
