For as far back as the dawn of independence, Zimbabwean writers have showcased phenomenal ability in both storytelling and language use. Across the years the country’s literary forces have made a mark both at home and abroad. Among these few have been as impactful as Ignatius Mabasa.

The author and poet has not just been the mind behind brilliant novels but a driving force in children’s literature. In recognition of this work, Mabasa has been nominated for the 2026 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, the world’s most prestigious prize in children’s literature.

The international literary honour was established by the Swedish government in 2002 to honour the Swedish children’s author Astrid Lindgren (1907–2002). The prize is five million Swedish kronor (about $500,000), making it the richest award in children’s literature and one of the richest literary prizes in the world. The winner of the award will be announced on the 14th of April 2026.

A frequent performer at schools as a storyteller, Mabasa has written several children’s books in English and Shona, including The Man, Shaggy Leopard and the Jackal; and other stories, which won the NAMA in 2010. His book Meri Nebhutsu Tsvuku was a NAMA nominee for Outstanding Children’s Book in 2013.

In 2021 he became the first person ever to complete a doctoral thesis in Shona.
