Readers in Harare have something new to look forward to. Harare Book Club, in partnership with mental health charity Friendship Bench Zimbabwe, has launched a new community library at the Friendship Bench Hub in Mt Pleasant. The aim? To make books affordable and accessible to everyone, no matter what they love to read.

The collection already features over 450 titles, ranging from politics and travel to romance, children’s books, and graphic novels. There’s something for every kind of reader, whether you’re just starting out or searching for your next favourite author.

Why Reading Matters

Did you know that regular reading is also linked to better mental well-being, increased empathy, and even improved brain health as we age? Studies also show that reading for just six minutes a day can reduce stress levels by up to 68%— that’s even more effective than listening to music or taking a walk.

Friendship Bench & Harare Book Club are creating a space where stories can heal, inspire, and connect people, and we’re here for it!

Membership is USD $7 for 6 months, $5 is refundable at the end of your membership

If you’re in Harare, you can sign up here: Membership Form.

Not in Harare? You can still support the library by sponsoring a book through their Amazon Gift List.

There’s also a free book exchange shelf at the entrance—borrow a book, leave a book. No membership required, just a bit of honesty and a good book to share.

You can visit the library every Wednesday from 09:00 to 16:30 at 9 Avon Rise, Mt Pleasant. If you have books to donate, you can drop them off on weekdays during working hours.

For more details, visit hararebookclub.com/library.

If you care about reading and community, this is a great way to get involved, support mental wellness, or simply enjoy more books.
