Award-winning gospel musician Mathias Mhere said preparations for his June 21 eighth album launch are underway and running unabated, despite Malawian singer Skeffa Chimoto indicating that he will not be part of the red carpet event.
Mhere is scheduled to launch his eighth album titled “Greater than Solomon” at The Venue in Avondale where Skeffa was leading the list of guests to grace the function, among others.
Skeffa, the Dhindindi maker said, is scheduled to perform in Johannesburg in the same week when he would launch his album, which therefore makes it difficult for him to attend the Harare function.
“Skeffa was among the list of guests who were lined up to attend the album launch, but he has indicated that he has other commitments on the day. He was available when we initially set the launch in May but unfortunately, I lost a brother forcing us to shift the date. But, everything is going as planned with preparations at an advanced stage. We are putting things in place and things are going according to our script,” Mhere told the Herald.
The Lilongwe-based Skeffa Chimoto, popularly known as the Jamming Machine in Malawi, is not a new voice on the local music scene, having previously recorded with local gospel outfit Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) Voice of Mbare on their album titled Flash-Back.
Mhere was last month forced to postpone Greater than Solomon launch after his brother, Tungamirai, tragically passed away following a car accident in South Africa. He told the Newsday that he will pen an additional song dedicated to his brother who he said was a passionate supporter of his music.
“He was very supportive of my music and I’m definitely going to pen a song for him on the forthcoming album… The song is just to remember him. He loved music too, although he didn’t sing professionally,” he said.
Skeffa was roped in by Mhere on the song Nyika Dzibatane, which he says seeks to unite the two countries musically and culturally, as we have enjoyed a cordial relationship.
Among others expected to grace Mhere’s album launch is high-flying artist Jah Prayzah.
“I also did a song that featured our own icon Jah Prayzah titled Jerusalem. Jah (Prayzah) is also among the list of guests to attend the launch. We have other surprise guests who will also be attending the function.”
Mhere’s nine-track album was produced by Lyton Ngolomi, Tatenda Viali, DJ Tamuka and Oskid.
It will be accompanied by two videos for songs Mai John and Jericho.
Other songs to look forward to Mhere’s album are Ndizarurire, Munhu Haasekwe, Tsika dzeChipostora, Jakuchichi, Hembe dzeMubhero, Chipangamazano and Waisiya Nyika.
Mhere said the album will be a fusion of old and a new sound as the musician seeks to attract more fans.
