Burgeoning Zimbabwean urban-contemporary gospel singer and fashion designer Mawu Veins has launched a new online comedy show called Hezvo TV, Hallelujah Mag has exclusively learnt.
The show that stars himself, (real name Malvin Masundire), Precious Muchemwa and his fellow Hashtag member Jecass Maffow will air weekly – giving a comic side of some of the hottest issues in the country.
Speaking to Hallelujah Magazine, the Shingirira crooner revealed why he is branching out into the humorous world;
‘I believe music and comedy are two things which can work together perfectly and from what I’ve heard people have always said that I have a sixth sense of humour. So, I have a realisation that being a gospel musician doesn’t always mean that you’ve to always look all that serious and everything.
I also realized that in church services when someone preaching throws a joke the congregation laughs. So, I asked myself how good will it be if I actually start doing those jokes and record them as skits for people’s pleasure, without being overtly preachy.
Meanwhile, I know that we’re going through a lot as a nation, but at the end of the day people need to laugh and here we are giving them a reason to laugh.’
On the content they will cover, Mawu said they won’t be limited to the Christian niche only. It is their plight that it tickles everyone in different ways.
‘I won’t say our content is limited. I can do anything which offends no one, something that not vulgar or affects anyone in a bad way. Most if not all of our skits evolves around issues we face in our day-to-day life as Christians, the things we experience at home, at church or at any other places we go.
Most of these things are hilarious hence have to be shared with the public.’
Nonetheless, the singer also clarified that venturing into comedy did not mean he is forsaking his musical career. In fact, there is a lot happening in his space as far as recording new music is concerned.
‘God permitted, plans have it that I was supposed to release my third album later this year but the budget is too tight right now since I’m still working on visuals for my sophomore Aneni: God With Me.
But because I hate to disappoint my fans I ’ve released a couple of singles and I’ll be compiling them at the end of the year. So, we will be having a single compilation.
Some of their recent skits have been about Zodwa Wabantu, The Harare Agricultural Show, School fees, Roadblocks and are available for free streaming on their Facebook page here.
