The 2019 edition of the Prophets Emmanuel and Ruth Makandiwa Invitations Concert Awards Night (PERMICAN) took place last Friday, November 22, at the Harare City Sports Centre, ending up three years of the awards’ dry spell.
The nocturnal ceremonial event ran under the theme “Creatively Touching Souls” and was hosted by radio personalities Tich Mataz, MisRed and Miss Becky.
Attendees were regaled with rare performances from various acts, among them Gemma Griffiths, Minister Michael Mahendere, Janet Manyowa, Kuda Mutsvene, Tembalami, Bryan K, Takura, Vabati vaJehovah, Sharon Manyika, ZimPraise and Joyful Praise.
Songbird Manyowa emerged as the biggest winner of the night, having bagged the Best Album, Best Female Artist, Best Song Writer and Best Video accolades.
Midlands-based rising gospel outfit Joyful Praise, which was up for six nods, was one step behind Manyowa as they scooped three gongs from the categories of Best Newcomer, Best Song awards for their hit track, Ngoro Yeminana and the Best Group/Duo for the album, Joyful Praise Season 2. Tamie Bimha, the outfit’s producer also won the Best Producer of the Year award.
Minister Michael Mahendere had a double glory as he walked away with the Most Viewed Song Online award for his track “Salt of the Earth” and the Best Male Artist award, outshining contenders Tembalami, Jonah Chivasa, Tatenda Mahachi and Kuda Mutsvene.
Fast-rising musician Mambo Dhuterere basked in his novice grandeur snatching the Best Traditional Song laurel with his Mweya Ndisesekedze song, trumping aspirants that included Joyful Praise Choir, Blessing Shumba, Spirit Praise and Vabati VaJehovah featuring Jah Prayzah.
The Best Urban Contemporary song went with sensational gospel diva Sharon Manyika, while Jonah Chivasa and Chelsea Mguni took home the Best Collaboration award with “Ndozvinoita Nyasha” duet.
The USA-based gospel icon Dr Comfort Manyame won Best Diaspora Gospel Artist award.
Doyen musicians of yesteryear Diva Mafunga and Shuvai Wutawunashe were both honoured with Legendary Awards.
