National Gallery of Zimbabwe Shuts its Doors

The National Gallery of Zimbabwe shall be temporarily closing its doors in the face of the current COVID- 19 crisis. They made the confirmation in a written statement yesterday.

The closure, according to the statement was a Government of Zimbabwe directive.

As one of the important institutions in the Tourism and Cultural matrix, Government has instructed that the National Gallery of Zimbabwe closes to the public until further notice. – NGZ

The news also confirms the postponement of the anticipated Cuban Art showcase by David Palacios.

In this light, the exhibition The Point of View by David Palacios, which was scheduled to open on Thursday the 19th of March 2020 has been postponed, until further notice.

The 63-year-old National Gallery of Zimbabwe has three branches namely in Bulawayo, Mutare ad Gweru. All three will be closed seeing all Exhibitions and Public Programming postponed until advised.

According to CNN, Coronavirus cases are up to 218,000 globally and millions across the world have been put under lockdown. The European Union has closed its borders for 30 days.

While closer to home; President Emmerson Mnangagwa, this week declared a state of Emergency in Zimbabwe.

However, it is still unofficially clear how many confirmed cases exist in Zimbabwe.
