Zimbabwe President Speaks Against Corruption Despite Election Date Ticking

President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa represented by the Minister of Environment, Water and Climate Oppah Muchinguri Kashiri has said that the government, which is left with 4 days up to elections is committed to fight corruption at every level during a meeting with the informal sector.
Zimbabwe has been losing US$ 1 billion annually in revenue through corruption with police and local government officials among the top offenders according to a Transparent International 2016 report.

“Committed to fight corruptionat every level hence we are strengthening institutions that fight corruption,” Muchinguri Kashiri said. “We say no to corruption, no corruption within councils and corruption at our border posts”
“My government will not stand by and watch the deterioration of our local authorities due to corruption and incompetence of councils,” Muchinguri-Kashiri said.

The Environment Minister, reading the President’s speech, said there is need to realise that there is life after elections.

“Great work must be done in every sector to increase the economic opportunities for all our people especially the youths and women to create wealth for more of our people,” Kashiri.
“Our country must leap frog and catch up with the rest of the region and beyond. To this end my government has made the deliberate decision to now focus on econmic development, modernisation, industrialisation and the improvement of our infrastructure”

Zimbabwe is heading for elections to be done on Monday 30 July 2018 next week.
Organisations representing the informal sector during the meeting said that they are facing challenges in ordering goods due to cash shortages.
Besides cash, informal sector also complained about tax charges and also requested a one stop shop for imported motor registration to make the vehicle importation easier.
