We knew it was just a matter of time, this Saturday, 12 February 2022, something new will be trailblazing in Zimbabwe. These are the first-ever Style Icon Zimbabwe Fashion Awards in recognition of creative excellence which includes stylists, models, designers, fashion risk-takers, influencers, and beauticians.
The awards, which kick off at 6 pm at Harare International Conference Center (HICC) are running under the theme “Celebrating Fashion In Our Environment.”
Speaking to journalists in Harare today, Patron of the Style Icon Zimbabwe Awards Lillian Madyara said the awards that start with an exhibition at 1 PM, which will showcase the Zimbabwean fashion industry.
“We have got to realize and acknowledge the players that have been in the industry, technically all our lifetime, for example, Bata and Paramount, these are the people who have made it and are still swimming despite the environment in which they operate in so we really want to give them a platform to applaud them and say well done,” Madhara said.
Style Consultancy x Hollywood Lee in conjunction with Boss Brand and Gateway Stream will be sponsoring the awards that are expected to be carried out annually. Madyara said she could not have hosted the awarding ceremony alone since it is a much bigger event
“We needed to partner with brands that understand the vision, that would also help us carry it through,” she said.
A notable style icon herself, Madyara aka Hollywood Lee highlighted the Awards already have plans for the future.
“This is a movement that we would like to go on and on and not stop.”
Fashion awards have been taking place in European countries. The Style Icon Zimbabwe Fashion Awards, makes Zimbabwe one of the few countries to localize such ceremonies besides the African Fashion Designer Awards that take place at a continental level.
Fashion is responsible for 10% of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions and 20% of global wastewater and uses more energy than the aviation and shipping sectors combined. The Conservation Hierarchy publication reports that the global fashion industry is one of the largest and most influential industries on the planet which generates over USD 1.7 trillion in revenues annually, and employs 60-75 million people in value chains that are spread across the globe.
The industry is said to have has served as a stepping stone to development’ in many countries, and continues to do so in many developing nations.
Explaining the theme, the ceremony patron said the awards are looking at several environments people are operating in, including nature, built-in, city life, water, and mining.
Lillian indicated that Fashion spans across industries and environments.
“Our main agenda is to protect, preserve, and promote, the preservation of these environments through the medium of fashion.” concluded Madyara.
