Interim Secretary of the Lotteries and Gaming Board Chief Superintendent M.P Chingozha has today threatened to go after illegal gambling also known as njuga.
The Chief Superintendent speaking on the occasion of the destruction of exhibits used in the commission of illegal gambling at Morris Depot said criminality has no place within progressive communities.
“There is no fairness that comes with smuggling unapproved gambling devices that have no integrity and to that our position is clear, ladies and gentlemen,” Chingozha said.
“We will descend heavily on such errant citizens who seek to cause unnecessary hemorrhage to our economy, promote money laundering and deflate all efforts towards attainment of the 2030 National Vision.”
The secretary also said the attitude to deal effectively with illegality within the Lotteries and Gaming Board is about operators, the regulator, law enforcement, and players who need a fair Return to Player.
The Chief Superintendent also said njuga is not good news to legitimate operators and neither does the act amuse authorities.
“If we do not reconfigure, realign our attitude we will choke off all prospects for sustainable economic growth. We will fail to improve the livelihoods of our people at a critical moment when the Head of State is advancing the need not to leave anyone.”
“Once our attitude is suspect then we will only promote the vicious cycle of gambling. Gambling and gambling, no decent wins hence submerge into pain poverty.”
Zimbabweans have been going for gambling as a way of living with jobs becoming hard to find in a country facing deep economic challenges.
The Lotteries and Gaming Board is using the mantra Lotteries and Gaming Board Promoting Fair Gambling in a campaign against illegal betting.
