Zimbabwe yesterday abstained in the vote on the resolution on Ukraine in the United Nations General Assembly with the country not convinced that the outcomes adopted point in the direction of dialogue.
Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Professor Amon Murwira. said that yesterday’s resolution on the contrary poured more fuel to the fire further complicating the situation in Ukraine.
“Zimbabwe believes that it is the duty of the international community not to make that situation more complex than it already is,” he said.
“The International Community must tirelessly work towards the facilitation of dialogue aimed at finding a durable solution on the situation.”
Zimbabwe is also against the imposition of unilateral sanctions stating that it is contrary to the United Nations Charter according to the Minister.
The Minister said sanctions unleash untold humanitarian crises and human suffering of the ordinary people.
“Unilateral sanctions have never worked to resolve any situation,” Murwira said.
“Zimbabweans, have been victims of unilateral sanctions for 20 years and would not wish this on anyone. Dialogue is the way forward.”
The resolution demands that Russia immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.
The vote on the resolution was 141 to 5, with 35 abstentions on denouncing the invasion of Ukraine.
Western countries which already imposed more sanctions on Russia to cripple the economy are avoiding military intervention in Ukraine.
