Alex Muringani does more than just take pictures, he imprints his own persona in the form of visual art. Better known as the Zezuru Rockstar, Alex is a Zimbabwean Creative Consultant by profession and the brains behind his dream Zezuru Creatives under the mentorship of Kuda and Chido Musasiwa. The Zezuru Rockstar has had a busy year setting up collaborations in a manner that is far from easy to ignore; from rebranding Ammara Brown and Soul Afrika to Junior Brown’s comeback. Flavian stole a moment or two with the Zezuru Rockstar.
Flavian Makovere: Tell us about the coolness that is your name
Zezuru Rockstar: It’s a name that I have carried with me for years now. Zezuru because I come from the Zezuru tribe and Rockstar is not in the sense of a rock band leader no! (Chuckles) It’s in the sense of someone who lives life to the fullest in a more positive manner. I am someone who can stay up all night long, yet wake up early and take care of business in the morning thus Zezuru Rockstar.
FN: Give a little more insight into what you do…
ZR: I am not only a photographer, I manage creatives despite their Art, being music, Literature or Visual Arts; giving them honest constructive criticism and focusing on their overall image.
FN: Where do you draw your inspiration?
ZR: Life inspires me, the things I see and live have shaped who I am as a person and the fact that I never met my mom drives me everyday.
FN: Creative hopes for the future?
ZR: To create an industry with a balance for our local arts, we want to introduce a self-sustained industry where everyone is celebrated and makes an income for whatever Art they do. Basically to bring other creative dreams to reality.
