Notorious rapper and serial genre hopper Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr. who is famously known by his stage name as Snoop Dogg may not be the first person you think of when you think about Gospel music.
Well, that may change very soon, as the rapper is planning to release a full gospel album in 2018.
In a recent interview, the 46-year-old star revealed to Billboard his interest in getting holy with his bars. He said:
‘You know I’m always cooking up something. I’ll have some new projects for y’all in the New Year.… I have always wanted to try Gospel. This may surprise some people but all I gotta say is get ready for some good for your soul music in 2018…It’s always been on my heart, I just never got around to it ’cause I always be doing gangster business or doing this or doing that.”
While the project has yet to be named, Snoop has been teasing the gospel project since June 2017.
Snoop Dogg may have gotten his start in hip-hop, but over the years he’s become one of music’s most notorious nomads. His ceaseless exploratory enthusiasm is one of the reasons he’s been a mainstay in music for so long. In both solo projects and collaborations, Snoop has tested nearly every genre, from country to disco, to old-school West Coast hip-hop, to reggae…and now gospel.
While it’s not clear whether Snoop Dogg’s voice will be on the yet-to-be-released album, it will feature singers like Patti Labelle, Faith Evans, Charlie Wilson and Jeffrey Osborne.
The album is bound to get some flack from the church. Snoop is apparently no saint, in fact we don’t recommend our saved Christian fraternity looking up his music videos or the rap albums he’s made over the years. However, he is talented at mixing beats and his time in the music industry has allowed him to rub shoulders with some really talented gospel singers.
According to Snoop, the project was inspired by his mother, Beverly Broadus-Green, she has a vested interest in the album. He reached out to ask for her blessing on the album, and he received it. She is an ordained evangelist whose work focuses on helping at-risk youth succeed in school.
