Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) Board has appointed Regina Chinamasa as the Acting Commissioner General of the Authority with effect from 1 February 2022.

Chinamasa takes over from Rameck Masaire who retired from the Authority effective 31 January 2022.

In a press statement by ZIMRA Board Vice-Chairperson, Josephine Matambo has vast experience in domestic taxes and customs and excise fields.

“Currently Ms. Chinamasa is the Commissioner for Revenue Assurance in which position she is credited for introducing various processes that are plugging revenue leakages through modern investigative and compliance systems,” Matambo said.

Chinamasa’s ascension comes after ZIMRA reversed a decision to offer the Acting Commissioner General’s role to Moris Mpofu, the former Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC) boss who left office amid criminal abuse of office allegations in 2019.

Social media users had raised displeasure at the appointment of Chinamasa as ZIMRA Acting Commissioner-General due to the allegations.

Allegations were that the former ZCDC CEO recommended an ex-convict diamond dealer RAobal Hussein to trade in precious minerals with the Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe (MMCZ).

The state, however, withdrew the allegation charges against Mpofu before plea after it failed to gather evidence that warranted his prosecution.

Chinamasa is not the first woman to hold the Commissioner-General post, Faith Mazani held such a post from February 2018 to February 2021.

The country is yet to get another Commissioner-General after the departure of Mazani from the post.
