Last night Winky D came out on top in Dakar, Senegal at the 8th edition of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA). The Gafa President as he is popularly known, walked away with the Best Male Artist in Southern Africa Award for his December 2021 release, Happy Again. He beat out competition from A-Reece, Focalistic, Gemini Major and Kabza De Small among others. The award comes as Winky D’s first AFRIMA and its an extremely worthwhile addition to an already impressive trophy case.
Happy Again had also earned Winky a nomination in the Best Artist, Duo or Group in African Reggae, Ragga, Dancehall category. In addition to Winky D, Nutty O, Tamy Moyo and Sha Sha were also in the running for various awards on the night.
The AFRIMA Awards are arguably one the continents biggest awards ceremony. As hosts of this year’s edition Senegal were the first French-speaking country to host the All Africa Music Awards. AFRIMA is a combined effort by music professionals across the continent aimed at celebrating the rich musical heritage of African continent. About 44 countries vied to be the host of the iconic continental awards ceremony. AFRIMA is spearheaded by a group of professionals and music stakeholders known as the International Committee.
