Christian music artists in the UK will unite to record and release a charity single in aid of the southern African countries that suffered the effects of Cyclone Idai last month.

The project, ‘One Voice’ led by Lawrence Johnson who founded London Community Gospel Choir, will help raise funds for development charity Tearfund, who are on the ground supplying emergency relief.

Tropical Cyclone Idai ripped through Mozambique as a high-end Category 2 storm with 175 kph (110 mph) winds on March 14 before moving inland into Zimbabwe and Malawi. It affected 1.7 million people in its wake and left a trail of devastation and heavy loss of life.

Speaking on behalf of One Voice, Les Moir from the Christian record label Integrity Music, told the UK’s Premier Christian Radio:

“Cyclone Idai came just before the harvest season and washed away crops that would have provided food for this year. We’re partnering with Tearfund who are working closely with national partners to support the relief effort – delivering emergency shelter kits, food such as pulses and maize flour, water purification tablets, and urgent health assistance.

Tearfund’s immediate response has been on saving lives, but now as the flood waters recede and the extent of the damage is being realised, communities are beginning to think about how they will rebuild their lives. We want to help them rebuild and find the strength to carry on.”

Meanwhile, tropical Cyclone Kenneth – the strongest storm to hit the region since records began – has killed 38 people since it made landfall in Mozambique last Thursday, with the death toll climbing to 38, the Mozambican government’s disaster management institute said on Monday.

Christian singers, bands, choirs, rappers and African gospel artists will gather on 4th May to record the single at a Bedfordshire recording studio.

Leading producers and engineers including Goz-i-am who has worked with Emeli Sande, Hillsong London, Israel Houghton and many more will collaborate to put together a single titled ‘Strength To Go On’.

The single is set to be released in June 2019 and will be available for download on all major platforms.
