President Emmerson Mnangagwa has today conducted a COVID-19 address to the nation stating that the lockdown enforcers will have a listening ear to the concerns of the public during the next 21 days starting today.
Zimbabwe’s leader allowed the country citizens to leave homes if there is a need to buy food and medicines during the lockdown to stop the spread of COVID-19.
“The security services will be enforcing the lockdown with a listening ear. Their job is to help, to protect and to keep us all safe. But my Zimbabwean brothers and sisters, all this is in your hands. I know it is not easy,” he said.
The government deployed the security sector to enforce lockdown to stop the spread of a pandemic that has claimed over 36 000 lives worldwide in less than five months.
“During these 21 days, Government will work tirelessly to make sure that we are ready to face all scenarios,” the Zimbabwean leader said.
“We must make sure that our medical teams are equipped and protected, and that our hospitals fully are prepared. That our citizens are ready. (sic)
“Let’s be clear, food suppliers and food stores will remain available and open. Medical supplies will remain open and available,” he went on.
The President also stated that the 21-day lockdown is not a punishment, but an opportunity to save lives.
“We have 21 days right now to save lives. And how will we save those thousands of lives? By acting responsibly, and staying at home,” he said.
