TrapSu originator Tanto Wavie has always been one to recognise greatness when he sees it. Right from his breakout hit “John Chibadura”, Tanto has used his music to celebrate those who excel at their craft. The latest such person to be honoured through Tanto’s music, is none other than Nigerian Grammy nominated singer Asake.
Produced by Chi Beat Cha Tanto, Tanto Wavie’s producer persona, the track “Asake” has a distinctive guitar riff and the multi-genre sound we’ve come to know and love from Tanto Wavie. The song talks about those who don’t believe in him or see his potential and how they’re going to wake up one day and see him achieving his dreams.
On the chorus Tanto sings, “Vese vanoita sleeping on me, vasiye varare. Vachazomuka ndava lonely at the top fanike Asake.” This line carries a double meaning, as it not references Asake’s success but his hit single “Lonely at the Top”. On the song Tanto Wavie also makes reference to footballers N’golo Kante, Sadio Mane and Cristiano Ronaldo. Tanto’s love for football is something that has been evident in his music since he made the track “Xavi-Nesta”.
“Asake” was released with visuals directed by Tamu Ngwaru, and the video has a retro feel but in modern settings. Tanto Wavie and crew are clad in outfits that bring to mind the 80s, topped off with afros that have since become an indelible mark of the artist.
