South African Rapper AKA, born Kiernan Forbes, is said to have been shot dead on Friday night in Durban, South Africa.
His family confirmed the news via a press statement posted on the rapper’s social media pages.
“It is with extreme sadness that we acknowledge the passing of beloved son, and confirm his untimely and tragic passing on the evening of February 10, 2023. We are awaiting further details from the Durban Police.
To us, Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, was a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend, most importantly father to his beloved daughter Kairo. To many he was AKA, SUPERMEGA, BHOVA and the many other names of affection his legion of fans called him by. Our son was loved and he gave love in return. In this time of grief we appeal for your compassion, space and time to congregate as a family to decide on the upcoming days.
We thank you for the love and support we’ve received thus far, and ask you to continue to keep us in your prayers and uplifted in the Lord…”
According to a report by IOL news, two unknown cars are believed to have opened fire just before 10 pm, while AKA was standing outside the Wish Restaurant.
Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the shooting without specifically naming AKA.
I can confirm that two men were killed and one of them is a well-known rapper. Police will not be releasing any names of the victims yet until a full investigation is completed.
Tebello Tibz Motsoane is said to be a close friend of AKA, who was also shot dead.
Kiernan Jarryd Forbes known professionally as AKA was born (28 January 1988) and raised in Cape Town, Forbes gained recognition after releasing his single “Victory Lap” from his debut studio album, Altar Ego (2010).
Forbes continued his success by releasing studio albums which include Levels (2014), Touch My Blood (2018), Bhovamania (2020), and the collaborative album with Anatii, titled Be Careful What You Wish For (2017).
He was set to release his next project on the 24th of February. The rapper leaves behind a 7 year old daughter. He was also in a relationship with rapper Nadia Nakai.
