Without what the industry may loudly underline as a hit or an LP for that matter, Spain-based Zimbabwean artist Tina Masawi is fast becoming one of the modern-day examples of a woman who can do it all. She’s driven, talented, intelligent, focused, and someone who keeps on pushing herself harder.
Juggling the pressures of being a singer, actress, and model and with over a decade’s experience in the creative sector, she is renowned for her distinctive art direction and virtuosity.
Tina’s journey started off at Reps Theatre and 7Arts, where she participated in many musical plays. Since those days, her career has never looked back as she has grown in leaps and bounds to even grace the world-famous Teatro Royale and the Gran Teatro Liceu in Spain, backed by a 60 piece ensemble.
The singer’s vocal range, stage presence, and overall artistry speak of a deep-rooted background in the arts that is evident in her current works.
“My parents had the best taste in music, and my mom loved to sing. I grew up listening to a wide range of genres, from UB40 to Jimi Hendrix to Fleetwood Mac to Aretha, to Aaliyah. I have lived music for as long as I can remember. I remember my very first professional singing gig. It was the Musical Theatre production of Killer Queen: We Will Rock You at 7arts Theatre. After that, I joined several bands, most notably Jazz Invitation. We performed and toured together for about 3 years until I moved to Spain, where I am now based. I was so fortunate to meet a lot of amazingly talented people to equip me with the knowledge I needed and to always cheer me on,” she told zim-abroad.com in 2020.
Currently, Tina is associated with Showtime Records stable where she works with artists and producers such as Reverb7, Courtney Rusike, Simba Tagz and Fungai Nengare.
In her own words, she describes her biggest career moment when she together with Courtney sang at Oliver Mtukudzi’s first tribute concert, sharing the stage with some of the greatest of the region.
“That was definitely a career highlight along with the recent performances at the Teatro Royale and Teatro Gran Liceu,” she said of the experience.
In 2020, Tina dropped the “91” EP to critical acclaim. The EP is available on streaming platforms.
