It was 2011 when Wizkid released his single Don’t Dull. Seven years later the lyrics, “sitting in the corner dressed in DOLCE & GABBANA” have evolved into an exciting reality.
Nigerian Musician Wizkid historically strutted the Milan, Italy catwalk in the DOLCE & GABBANA DNA Spring Summer 2019 Men’s Fashion Collection as the first African Artist to do so. The Fake Love Singer strutted shyly in a sequined rebel mask, fur shoulder bomber jacket and embroidered track-pants. The Star Boy wasn’t alone, British supermodel Naomi Campbell was there to usher in his new reality in a pin-stripe suite reminiscent of Michael Jackson. Could Wizkid be a Fashion Creative like Kanye? With friends like Naomi Campbel with over 30 years in the business of Fashion, the question is; what can’t you do?
In March this year, Naomi travelled down to Lagos to walk Nigeria’s Arise Fashion Week catwalk. In interviews with Vogue, Naomi was swooned about getting African Fashion, Talent and Creativity ‘out there‘. Naomi also came through to support her bow, Grime Artist Skepta. True to his Naija roots Skepta hosts the BBK Africa Homecoming concert in Lagos annually. There, Star Boy, Nasty C and Tiwa Savage tore the stage up and images of Naomi chilling with the Star Boy were all-over Wizkid’s Instagram. The supermodel’s trip also sparked controversy when images of her ‘chance meeting’ with President Buhari made it out there instead. Little did we know, that sis was working in the background on something more exciting.
We like to think this was Wizkid got his big Fashion break!
Speaking of big breaks! Last month at the Afrorepublik Concert in London, Wizkid headlined to the sold-out O2 Arena packed to 22,000 fans. This listed him as the first Nigerian Artist to do so, listing him with history makers like Adele, Beyonce and the late Prince.
Wizkid has collaborated with Drake, Ty Dollar $ign, Dua Lipa and an avalanche of the continent’s hottest Artists. What on earth could be next for the 27-year-old?
One thing for sure is, we’ve learnt that affirmations do the damn thing! Congratulations to the Star Boy and well done to Naomi Campbell for looking out. Big sis Naomi definitely put-a-brother-on.
At least Nigeria got one thing right this weekend!
Wizkid sang these lines when he had ZERO Rights to do so. We must all learn to SPEAK, SING, DRAW and ACT Out our DREAMS, not our FEARS. Dreams do come true! #YouHaveARightToBeMotivated
