Four decades after liberation from British rule, Zimbabwe today celebrates 40 years of decolonisation and re-establishing a nation and a culture that goes along with it, in a bid to effectively undo the damage that was been done through colonisation. It’s a patriotic tradition. Normally, this holiday is revered and very celebrated with iconic national gatherings, music, parties and other forms of festivities but for the first time in history, there are no gatherings to mark the anniversary due to the national lockdown enforced to curb the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.
But hey, as you know the show must go on somehow. In that respect, we have compiled some of the best Independence day reflections by some of our favourite twimbos as we say Happy Birthday Zimbabwe! Read, enjoy and most importantly reflect.
I’m proud to be Zimbabwean and I’m grateful we can be united under our flag, a flag reminding us that we can get through anything.
Happy Independence Day Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is 40 years old. It’s been quite a journey. What time in the 4 decades will you remember as the best of times? For me, Independence Day. It was a time of hope, enjoying the first fruits of freedom and looking foward to so much promise. #ZimbabweAt40 🇿🇼 pic.twitter.com/Eujr1Tr3s4

After a war that killed so many, 40 years ago today my beautiful country Zimbabwe finally became independent. It meant basic rights to many who had been denied for so long. Bob Marley acknowledged & celebrated with us. #ZimbabweAt40 #BobMarley 🇿🇼#Africa https://t.co/FwJJsGJfLO
