Family Meeting comes as King Kandoro’s third comedy special in just as many years. From Reps Theatre to 7 Arts, the comedian has already sold out the classic venues and now he dares with his latest dream to sell out Celebration Centre. From delivering a second season of his current affairs show Properganda, to his twist on the Batman story in the Mukoma Bruce series, Kandoro has done it all this year and his latest special has seen him go on a tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Kandoro has always delivered specials with a particular theme, something that sets each one apart from the previous one. He started off with Conspiracy Theories, then came The Prodigal Son and now Family Meeting. We caught up with the comedian for a quick chat about his upcoming performance on Saturday and the state of Zimbabwean comedy:
How different does this upcoming performance feel from previous specials?
Any chance I get to connect with the people is always special, but I think this one is a little bit extra because we have an opportunity to make history for Zimbabwean comedy. The last time a comedy show drew numbers of this size was when Anne Kansime was in town. Now we have an opportunity to create a moment with some home grown talent and I’m really looking forward to that challenge and experience.
How confident are you, you’ll achieve the dream of selling out the Celebration Centre?
I’m cautiously optimistic, let me say that. Even if we don’t actually sell out, I’m incredibly proud of their effort, we’ve done enough to make it easier for the next person to actually sell out the entire auditorium.
How do you feel the Family Meeting tour has been received so far?
The reception has been wonderful. We’ve done 5 cities so far in South Africa and Zim, we are hoping for the same this coming Saturday.
How do you feel about the current state of Zimbabwean comedy especially in regards to stand-up?
Zim Comedy is at an exciting stage right now, everyone is doing wonderful things, if you look at Simuka Comedy or Magamba TV, or Bustop everyone is just trying to push the envelope in terms of creation. I can’t wait for the economy to catch up to the talent that is in Zimbabwe and for everyone to start eating off their talent.
Kandoro is set to perform at Celebration Centre this coming Saturday and tickets are currently available for $15 for general access and $30 for VIP.
