Twitter has been a platform where feelings are thrown around, banter common-place and trolling takes centre stage as a form of entertainment. With the internet fast becoming a commodity in Africa, Twitter has seen a rise in African users increasing cross-border interaction that come with their own set of pros, cons and hilarity amongst the nationals.
The emergence of ‘country twars’ has brought a new and exciting dynamic to African Twitter. Tweets filled with mean lines, low blows and some, quite frankly…awesome memes, from Jollof Rice, skin tones, corruption and politics. Nothing is spared from being used ammunition in these battles of national pride which have gone on a little longer than one would like to assume. These hilarious roast contests started in 2015 with a #NigeriansVsGhanaians battle and have since grown to be a weekly experience which saw South Africa boldly challenge the United States just last week!
