Is Mzoe 7’s #Ulimenemene the Breakup Soundtrack we’ve been waiting for?

We still can’t wrap our heads around why more people don’t know about Bulawayo based Afro Beat / Pop Artist Mzoe 7! His quirky random catchphrases like ‘Mr. Gagagugu!’ and clever songs like ‘Chihuta Republic’ see him making notable yet pensive social commentary. Mzoe 7, is also, for a lack of better title ‘a man of the people’, with initiatives like ‘Keep A Child In School’ and community Pool Tournaments hosted in the Bulawayo high-density suburb of Entumbane. What’s not to love?!

Introducing us to his playful side late last year he released a tongue-in-cheek anti-Slay Queen anthem titled ‘Babes woMonthend’. Following the same trend this month Mzoe 7 released ‘Ulimenemene’, a song about a dishonest person/partner. Speaking to the Afro-beat rising star, he couldn’t hide his worry about the state of love and relationships in this generation.

“In our parents time, people used to get married, stick to one partner, not with one person today another tomorrow. This song is about promoting love, sharing common goals in today’s relationships” he said.

Speaking of love, the track sounds like a delicious Gqom love-child between the Destruction Boys, Maphorisa, Busiswa and Duma Ntando where Mzoe 7, who is more Afrobeat than Gqom surprises us and does his bit to playfully manage the vocals in what sounds effortless.

Quizzed about his Gqom ambitions, Mzoe 7 was quick to dash our imaginings

“I’m a vocalist, I don’t like to confine myself to one genre besides I wanted to flex a little bit on the Gqom and to make a fun song for winter and a great time for people to dance” mused Mzoe 7.

Artists like ExQ and Tamuka have been quick to give the Skaiva mastered and 5k produced single their thumbs up.

“People are enjoying the song which puts me under pressure to sort out the video…it’s on it’s way” insisted Mzoe 7

Since a menemene, is a sly person or a thief, perhaps this is the break-up song we’ve been waiting for when our friends send us those screenshots that confirm the worst. Talk about passive aggression on 100%, well, at least Mzoe 7 agrees.

“It’s a great song to play for your boyfriend or girlfriend when they are cheating…they’ll get the message”, he chuckled.

Currently, Mzoe 7 is using this year to pursue more on-screen opportunities and hopes to collaborate with more Zimbabwean artists like Killer T for more Afrobeat work.
