ZIMBABWEAN creatives are among the top African rockstars, despite the lack of viability or rather the little gratification that comes from the local industry.
Despite the adversities and hardships of being on this rollercoaster, it’s still an experience that’s not to be taken for granted because artists are a vessel, to quote Jay-Z, artists are like whistles, you blow through it and it makes a noise.
Artistry is a big part of life, it may arguably be bigger than life as life imitates art. Apologies I stray, but my point is, creatives and artists are an integral element of society because they speak for us, they express what we can not, and when they do. It’s bigger than life! It becomes the soundtrack to our lives, the theme song.
Artists have elastic immortality because their work outlives them. If anything it becomes bigger than them. Artists are heaven-sent because of the healing freedom and liberation they bring through the work that we consume.
To celebrate artists/creatives’ individuality, their work, the sleepless nights, and everything else they had to endure to stay standing, we dedicate The African Rockstars September Edition to them.
As a nation, we have stories to tell. As I like to say it, we’re all just moving stories waiting to be told. Our stories are more than worthy of the world stage. We can’t have gone through the tumultuous liberation struggles and come all this way just to be muted worldwide. Most importantly, we can’t have bred so much talent just to let it die down in our borders.
With the African Rockstars Edition issue’s cover pages adorned by the dominating Rowan and the lovely Mimi Bouvier and featuring a diverse range of creatives from the songbird Cindy to the lyrical Masimba to the brush virtuoso Tanaka waMwari to mention a few, one would have to be oblivious not to be excited by the creativity that Harare is exuding.
So with this issue, I’m urging our Gen-Z’s out there to support our Zimbabwean artists in whatever way you can because in the interwoven fabric of AFRICA, our presence in numbers is more than deserving to be there as well for the reason that we are also Africans who rock!
Rockstars, you’re living in the 21st century and doing something mean to it, better than anybody we have ever seen do it. The screams from the haters have a nice ring to it, and this issue is your theme song because every superhero needs one.
